Find the haircut that fits you

Compare fade height, clipper length, shape, styling time and upkeep—then take clear words and a useful reference to your barber.

Four decisions prevent most haircut mix-ups

1. Where should it get short?

Low stays near the ears. Mid sits around the temples. High removes more weight from the sides.

2. How short is the bottom?

Skin is bare-looking. A zero leaves fine stubble. A number 1 guard leaves about 3 mm.

3. What shape should the top have?

Decide whether you want texture, curls, a fringe, volume or an even clipper length before discussing the sides.

4. How often will you maintain it?

Skin fades lose their sharp contrast fastest. Softer tapers and longer guards usually grow out less noticeably.
